COP28's legacy
starts here
The UAE committed to net-zero by 2050 at COP28. Mandatory ESG reporting is live. 40+ UAE corporations have active Science-Based Targets. The UAE biodiversity carbon market is forming now — and the window to participate as a first mover is open.
The Fundamentals of Climate Finance
One tree, one credit, one shared future
A carbon credit certifies that one tonne of CO₂ has been removed or prevented from entering the atmosphere. Governments, corporations, and investors purchase these credits to meet climate commitments, funding biodiversity projects across the UAE.
Protect & Plant
Mangrove forests and natural areas are protected and replanted.
Measure Carbon
Experts measure and document carbon stored in ecosystems.
Certify
International bodies like Verra VCS certify and issue carbon credits.
International Trade
Credits are sold on voluntary international markets.
Why This Matters for the UAE
The UAE is committed to 'Nature Positive' and 'Net Zero by 2050'. Carbon projects enable the private sector to contribute to these goals while achieving long-term financial returns.
From Coastline to Certified Credit.
A blue carbon credit begins with a coastal ecosystem. It ends with internationally verified, tradeable certificates of climate impact. Here's every step in between.
Coastal Habitat Assessment
4–8 weeksA site survey and satellite analysis determine mangrove extent, tidal wetland mapping, and VM0033 eligibility — assessing canopy cover, inundation regime, carbon stock density, and land tenure.
Baseline & Blue Carbon Measurement
3–6 monthsA scientific baseline establishes tidal wetland carbon stock, organic soil carbon sequestration rates, and methane accounting. This forms the Project Design Document (PDD) submitted to Verra under VM0033.
Independent Verification (VM0033)
6–12 monthsAn accredited third-party auditor validates the project under Verra's tidal wetland and seagrass restoration methodology. This audit certifies both carbon additionality and biodiversity co-benefits.
Registry & Credit Issuance
1–3 monthsThe verified project is listed on the Verra public registry. Verra Carbon Units (VCUs) are issued alongside biodiversity certificates and co-benefit reporting for each tonne of CO₂ sequestered.
Corporate Sale & TCFD Reporting
OngoingCredits are sold to UAE and global corporations meeting net-zero and ESG commitments. Retirement is tracked on the public registry and full TCFD disclosure support is provided to purchasing organisations.

UAE: The Middle East's Climate Hub
Environmental leadership in the heart of the desert
The UAE is not just an oil nation — it's a global leader in renewable energy (Barakah, Masdar), afforestation (100M mangrove trees), and climate finance (COP28). This creates a unique carbon investment environment.
COP28 Legacy
The UAE hosted COP28 in 2023, reinforcing national and regional climate commitments.
Abu Dhabi Mangroves
Abu Dhabi holds 63% of UAE's mangrove forests — unique blue carbon credit opportunities.
Billion Tree Initiative
The UAE leads a billion-tree planting initiative across the region for afforestation and carbon storage.
Climate Legal Framework
UAE's climate law and sustainability disclosure requirements support carbon market development.
Green Finance Hub
Dubai and ADGM compete as leading international green finance centres.
Private Sector Demand
Major UAE corporations are actively seeking high-quality carbon credits for ESG targets.
The UAE Biodiversity Market Is Forming. Get In Early.
The UAE committed to net-zero by 2050 and mandatory ESG reporting for listed companies. 40+ UAE corporations have active Science-Based Targets. Abu Dhabi's mangroves are among the highest-density blue carbon ecosystems on Earth.
Blue Carbon Premium
Mangrove and tidal wetland credits carry a significant premium over standard forest credits — driven by biodiversity co-benefits, coastal protection value, and scarcity of verified blue carbon supply.
Mandatory ESG Disclosure
UAE's Securities and Commodities Authority mandates climate-related disclosures for listed companies. ADGM and DIFC green finance frameworks incentivise voluntary carbon credit procurement as part of Scope 3 strategies.
Article 6 Bilateral Potential
The UAE's Article 6 readiness — demonstrated at COP28 — means high-integrity domestic projects can generate Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs) for both national NDC delivery and international trading.
UAE Biodiversity Projects Verified Against Global Standards
Every project meets the highest international standards for carbon integrity and biodiversity impact.
Verra Verified Carbon Standard
UAE's mangrove and blue carbon projects qualify under Verra's VM0033 tidal wetland methodology — one of the highest-value carbon methodologies globally.
Gold Standard
Gold Standard certification for UAE's urban greening and coastal restoration projects, verifying SDG co-benefits including clean water, biodiversity, and community health.
Blue Carbon Initiative
Abu Dhabi's mangroves are enrolled in the international Blue Carbon Initiative — formally recognised as one of the world's highest-priority coastal carbon ecosystems.
COP28 UAE Framework
The UAE's hosting of COP28 in 2023 produced the 'UAE Consensus', aligning national carbon market development with the global climate transition framework.
Task Force on Climate Disclosures
UAE's Securities and Commodities Authority mandates TCFD-aligned climate disclosures for listed companies, driving corporate demand for high-quality carbon credits.
Science Based Targets Initiative
40+ UAE-headquartered corporations have adopted SBTi targets, creating structured corporate demand for verified carbon credits to bridge emissions gaps.
UAE Biodiversity Projects
Upcoming projects and opportunities in the forming UAE biodiversity carbon market.
Abu Dhabi Mangrove Blue Carbon
Development-phase blue carbon project under VM0033. Abu Dhabi's 75,000 ha of mangroves represent one of the highest-density coastal carbon systems in the Middle East.
Dubai Creek Wetland Restoration
Preliminary assessment of carbon and biodiversity credit potential from Dubai's coastal wetland and tidal creek systems.
UAE Seagrass Carbon
Seagrass meadows in UAE coastal waters are among the most productive blue carbon ecosystems globally. Carbon credit scoping underway under VM0033.
Oman Mangrove Initiative
Regional expansion scoping for mangrove carbon projects in Oman's Qurm Nature Reserve and Al Dimaniyat Islands.
UAE Mangrove Blue Carbon Initiative
The UAE's first independently verified biodiversity and blue carbon project — currently in development under Verra VCS methodology VM0033.
The UAE's Eastern Mangrove Lagoon National Park in Abu Dhabi is one of the most carbon-dense coastal ecosystems in the Middle East — mangrove soils store up to 3× more carbon per hectare than tropical forest. This upcoming project will measure, verify, and register blue carbon credits under Verra VCS methodology VM0033, making UAE-generated biodiversity credits available to regional and international corporate buyers for the first time.

Two Years After COP28: UAE's Carbon Market Has Grown 340%
Since hosting COP28 in December 2023, the UAE's voluntary carbon market has grown 340% in transaction volume, driven by ADGM's Carbon Trading Platform and growing corporate SBTi commitments from UAE-headquartered multinationals.
Abu Dhabi Mangrove Credits Trade at $28/tCO₂ — 3x the Global Average
Demand from European and Asian institutional buyers has pushed Abu Dhabi blue carbon credits to $28/tCO₂, establishing UAE mangrove credits as among the world's most valuable voluntary carbon instruments.
UAE Commits $2B to Nature Restoration Through ADNOC Carbon Fund
ADNOC's new $2 billion Nature Restoration Fund will finance mangrove expansion, desert afforestation, and seagrass restoration across the UAE and Arabian Peninsula, generating an estimated 8M annual carbon credits by 2030.
